Left-Hand Turns – The Most Dangerous Situation for Riders

You’re riding, doing everything right. Up ahead, there’s a car waiting to make a left turn at an intersection. You’ve got space. You’re visible. Everything looks fine.

But the distance is closing faster than they think.

In a split second, the driver makes their move—and your safety gap is gone.

This crash didn’t start at the intersection. It started hundreds of feet back.

The driver isn’t necessarily reckless. They’re doing what drivers do—looking for a gap. The problem is, they’re judging distance and speed based on cars, not motorcycles.

They see you… but they misinterpret what they’re seeing.

To them, it feels normal.

To you, it can be catastrophic.

Being right won’t protect you.

Slow down if something doesn’t feel right.

Cover your brakes.

Ask yourself: Where is my escape route?

Don’t ride with a “right of way” mindset. Ride with a survival mindset.

Scan early.

Position yourself where you’re most visible.

Give yourself time and space to react.

The goal isn’t to win the right-of-way argument—

It’s to make it home.

See it before it happens. Prepare before it starts.

Until next time—practice, practice, prac
